A driver was removed from his truck and transported to the hospital after he crashed into a utility pole, leaving Route 14 shut down for hours near Harvard Monday afternoon.

The Harvard Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 2:43 p.m. Monday to the area of US Medical Glove Company, 2001 North Division Street in unincorporated Harvard, for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Harvard Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said it was reported that a pickup truck had struck a utility.

Fire crews were still responding when the call was upgraded after receiving reports that the driver was unable to exit the vehicle and a large utility pole was leaning over the vehicle.

Firefighters arrived to find the pole was snapped at the base and was being held by the wires, Vucha said.

The male driver and sole occupant of the truck was still inside the vehicle.

Vucha said the driver was freed without the use of extrication tools and transported to Mercyhealth Hospital and Medical Center in Harvard with minor injuries.

Police shut down Route 14 in both directions from Crowley Road and Garfield Road for nearly three hours.

It was reopened around 5:30 p.m. after ComEd responded to repair the pole.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
