Police are investigating after a large disturbance and fight broke out and led to a gunman shooting a 26-year-old man in Zion Friday evening, authorities said.

The Zion Police Department responded around 5:07 p.m. Friday to the 2100 block of Hebron Avenue in Zion for a report of a large disturbance.

Zion Police Department Lt. Paul Kehrli said officers were responding when they received reports of shots fired in the same area.

Officers arrived and found numerous witnesses but no one who was actually involved in the incident.

An investigation shows that two groups of people who live in the area began fighting each other, Kehrli said.

The root cause of the fight is unknown. At least one person discharged a gun during the fight and fled the scene.

A 26-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the foot but was not at the scene.

Kehrli said it was learned that the man had self-transported to the hospital in a car prior to officers arriving.

He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released the same day.

Police set up crime scene tape around the area and shut down Hebron Avenue to traffic as they investigated Friday evening.

The incident occurred between the apartment buildings and the sidewalk on the west side of the street across from Galilee Park.

Multiple charges are pending for the participants involved in the fight and shooting, Kehrli said.
