A child and a mother were mostly uninjured after a crash resulted in a semi-tractor-trailer truck pinning an SUV against a traffic light pole near Crystal Lake Monday morning.
The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 7:40 a.m. Monday to Hillside Road and Walkup Road in unincorporated Crystal Lake for a vehicle crash with entrapment.
Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department Battalion Chief Darrell Cook said that while it was initially reported that people were trapped in the crash, it was soon reported that everyone was out of the vehicles.
Fire crews arrived to find a semi-tractor-trailer that had collided with a GMC Yukon Denali and pinned the SUV between a traffic light pole and the truck.
Cook said it appeared the semi-truck was making a wide right turn onto westbound Hillside Road when the GMC tried to cut inside of it as it made the turn, resulting in the collision.
Cook said the occupants of the GMC were unable to open their doors and they climbed out of the window.
The driver and sole occupant of the semi-truck was uninjured.
The driver of the GMC was also uninjured and a passenger in the GMC had a minor abrasion that did not require transport to the hospital, Cook said.
A witness reported that a mother and her juvenile child were the occupants of the GMC.
Cook said the crash occurred on the northwest corner of the intersection and the SUV sustained moderate to heavy damage. The semi-truck sustained minor damage.
Traffic was completely shut down traveling westbound on Hillside Road from Walkup Road.
The sheriff’s office issued an alert warning motorists to avoid the area due to the collision and said Walkup Road was also partially shut down.
The semi-truck was cleared from the scene and a tow truck was then able to remove the GMC.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the crash and it was not immediately known whether any citations were issued.
