Police say a driver caused a rollover crash that left their vehicle heavily damaged after striking a semi-tractor-trailer truck, shutting down Route 41 in North Chicago.

The North Chicago Police Department and North Chicago Fire Department responded around 2:40 p.m. Friday to the area of Route 41 south of Brompton Avenue for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

The incident was initially dispatched with a report of a person trapped in a car.

Fire crews arrived and found a passenger car, which had heavy damage, and a semi-truck involved.

They confirmed the driver, who was still inside the sedan, did not require extrication from the car.

North Chicago Assistant Police Chief Gary Lunn said the Mercedes sedan was traveling northbound on Route 41.

The Mercedes struck a barrier and entered the southbound lanes of Route 41 where it struck a semi-tractor-trailer truck.

The Mercedes eventually rolled over onto the roadway and came to rest upright in the grassy median between the northbound and southbound lanes.

Witnesses told officers that the same Mercedes had been driving erratically and striking barriers on Route 41 in Lake Bluff just prior to the crash, Lunn said.

It is believed the driver of the Mercedes may have had a medical episode that may have contributed to the crash, Lunn said.

The driver of the Mercedes, who was the sole occupant, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

A witness who was behind the Mercedes told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the driver did not appear to be severely injured. He had a cut to the top of his head and the erratic driving first began approximately two miles south of the scene.

Southbound Route 41 was temporarily shut down until the crash and debris on the roadway could be cleared. Northbound traffic was heavily impacted.

Lunn said no citations have been issued but the crash remains under investigation by the North Chicago Police Department.
