Felony charges have been filed against a suspect accused of attacking his mother with a pipe before a SWAT team took him into custody following a standoff inside a senior living facility in Gurnee.
The Gurnee Police Department responded around 6 p.m. Saturday to Thomas Place Gurnee, 401 North Hunt Club Road in Gurnee, for a report of a domestic disturbance.
Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor said officers arrived and found a 68-year-old woman who had suffered a head injury.
Officers learned the woman had been injured after her son struck her with a metal pipe.
The victim was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment and is expected to recover.
Gaylor said the suspect, identified as Maurice L. Freeman, 45, of Gurnee, remained inside the apartment following the incident.
Officers established a secure perimeter and worked to resolve the situation.
Multiple attempts were made to have Freeman exit voluntarily, including verbal commands and canine announcements, Gaylor said.
Freeman also had an active warrant for failing to appear in court and he has a prior history involving violence, which prompted a request for the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) to respond.
Nearby residents were temporarily evacuated from the floor as a precaution while officers continued negotiations and awaited additional resources, Gaylor said.
The NIPAS Emergency Services Team (EST) ultimately entered the apartment and took Freeman into custody without further incident.
Gurnee paramedics transported him to Advocate Condell Medical Center for a medical evaluation around 10:30 p.m.
Court records show Freeman was charged on Monday with aggravated battery to a victim over 60 and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, both Class 3 felonies, as well as two counts of misdemeanor domestic battery.
“The coordinated response from officers and partnering agencies contributed to resolving this situation safely and efficiently,” Gurnee Deputy Police Chief Jeremy Gaughan said.
“We appreciate that no additional injuries occurred and that everyone involved remained safe,” Gaughan said.
The Gurnee Police Department said the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Libertyville Police Department, Lindenhurst Police Department, North Chicago Police Department, Round Lake Beach Police Department, Round Lake Park Police Department and Round Lake Police Department assisted.
Court records show an arrest warrant was issued for Freeman after the charges were filed.
He is not in the custody of the Lake County Jail as of Tuesday afternoon. It is unclear if he is still hospitalized.
Court records show Freeman has a long history of cases in Lake County, including several felony, misdemeanor and domestic violence cases.
In December 2023, Freeman was arrested by the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Emergency Response Team after he allegedly battered a child and led police on a standoff where officers rescued several children from a home in Gurnee.
Prosecutors dropped all charges against Freeman in that incident.
Court records also show that Freeman’s case which he was wanted on at the time of the Saturday pipe attack was for charges of aggravated assault of a peace officer, battery, resisting a peace officer and disorderly conduct out of Waukegan from a July incident.
