Fire officials say a garbage enclosure became engulfed in flames and spread to a storage building, causing heavy damage to both, in Hainesville Monday evening.
The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded around 8:20 p.m. Monday to the 40 block of Fairlawn Drive in Hainesville for a report of a structure fire.
Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Charley Mitchell said firefighters arrived within three minutes of receiving the call.
They found heavy flames coming from a garbage dumpster enclosure, extending into a small storage building.
Mitchell said initial reports suggested that the fire started in the exterior area of the garbage enclosure and then spread up the back wall of the storage building before the fire department’s arrival.
Firefighters brought the fire, which sent flames and smoke billowing into the sky, under control within about 15 minutes.
Fire crews remained on the scene to locate, extinguish and overhaul remaining hot spots hidden within the structure due to the extent of damage, Mitchell said.
The fire occurred at a condominium community and no residents were injured.
Mitchell said the storage building and garbage enclosure sustained heavy damage but a cost estimate was not immediately available.
The Grayslake, Fox Lake, Lake Villa and Wauconda fire departments responded to the scene to assist with the incident, which was elevated to a Working Still Alarm.
McHenry firefighters covered other calls in the Round Lake area during the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District.
