Fire officials say dozens of animals were found inside a house that caught on fire and left two residents displaced near Woodstock Wednesday evening.

The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday to the 13300 block of Davis Road in unincorporated Woodstock for a report of a residential structure fire.

Woodstock Fire/Rescue District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said crews were still responding when they received additional information reporting the kitchen was on fire.

The incident was upgraded to a working fire response, prompting the request for additional resources.

The home is located in a rural area that does not have any fire hydrants near the location, Vucha said.

Firefighters arrived within minutes and found smoke showing from the single-story residence.

Both occupants had safely exited the home and were awaiting the arrival of the fire department.

Vucha said firefighters deployed hose lines and made entry where they encountered fire conditions in the kitchen.

The fire was quickly extinguished before it could spread further into the home.

Smoke damage was present throughout the house despite the fire being contained to the kitchen, Vucha said.

The house was deemed uninhabitable until repairs could be made.

The American Red Cross was requested to assist the two displaced residents.

Vucha said the home was also occupied by several dozen animals, including cats, rabbits and reptiles. None of them required obvious medical treatment.

McHenry County Animal Control was notified of the situation and no animal deaths were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District.
