A 9-year-old girl survived after being hit by an SUV while running across the street in Waukegan, requiring her to be flown to the hospital for treatment, police said.
The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 7:52 p.m. Saturday to the 700 block of South Jackson Street for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Officers arrived and found a 9-year-old child lying on the sidewalk, according to Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Craig Neal.
Neal said the child was being treated by paramedics after being struck by a vehicle.
A gray 2014 Nissan Rogue was at the scene and identified as being involved in the crash.
Neal said the driver of the Nissan told investigators they were traveling southbound on Jackson Street.
The driver said they saw a child run across the street in front of their car.
Officers were able to obtain Ring video camera footage that captured the crash, Neal said.
The video footage showed the child running westbound across Jackson Street before being struck by the Nissan.
Neal said it appeared the Nissan swerved to avoid striking the child but was unable to avoid the collision.
The child was transported by ambulance to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.
A LifeNet medical helicopter was called and met the ambulance at the hospital helipad.
The child was transferred to the flight crew and flown to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood for precautionary measures due to the age, Neal said.
The child was reportedly awake and breathing at the scene. She was stabilized at the hospital.
Neal said no citations were issued to the driver involved.
