A Lake County sheriff’s deputy and two others were hospitalized after a suspected impaired driver making an illegal maneuver caused a three-vehicle crash near Ingleside Saturday afternoon.
A Lake County sheriff’s deputy, driving a Ford Police Interceptor, was traveling westbound on Route 134 around 3:25 p.m. Saturday.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said the deputy was approaching Main Street on the border of Ingleside and Long Lake.
The sheriff’s deputy proceeded westbound when a BMW X4 was traveling on Main Street.
The T-style intersection is controlled by a stop sign on Main Street and there are no traffic control devices on Route 134, Covelli said.
The driver of the BMW, a 45-year-old Roselle man, pulled onto Route 134 in front of the marked squad car.
Covelli said the BMW attempted to make a U-turn back onto Main Street to travel northbound.
The front of the BMW struck the front of the westbound squad car.
The collision caused the squad car to then hit a Chevrolet Silverado, driven by a 23-year-old Round Lake Beach man, which was stopped at the stop sign on Main Street.
The deputy suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital where he was treated and released, Covelli said.
The driver of the BMW and his front seat passenger, a 36-year-old Round Lake Park man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and both were transported to an area hospital.
The driver of the Chevrolet was uninjured.
Covelli said open containers of alcohol were located in the BMW and impairment appears to be a factor.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) responded to conduct a crash investigation since it involved a police officer.
Train service at the Long Lake Metra Station remained uninterrupted.
The crash remains under investigation by the Round Lake Police Department and MCAT.
