A driver was hospitalized after firefighters had to extricate him from the cab of his semi-tractor-trailer truck that jackknifed into the concrete median on Interstate 90 near Marengo.

The Hampshire Fire Protection District and Illinois State Police responded around 7:15 a.m. Monday to the Interstate 90 at milepost 36.5 near Marengo for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Fire crews arrived and found a single-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90 just east of Route 23.

The crash involved a semi-tractor-trailer truck, which sustained significant damage.

An off-duty sheriff’s deputy who called 911 reported the injured driver was conscious and breathing but trapped in the vehicle.

ISP said the driver lost control of the truck and struck the concrete median barrier between the eastbound and westbound lanes.

Firefighters eventually freed him and an ambulance transported him to a local hospital. He was the sole occupant.

ISP said the driver, a 38-year-old man from Machesney Park, suffered “non-incapacitating injuries.” His condition was not released.

ISP did not say what led to the driver losing control and they continue investigating the incident, which did not involve any lane blockage.

A heavy wrecker service responded to remove the truck and trailer from the scene.
