A driver was transported to the hospital after a crash involving an SUV and a Metra train in Fox River Grove Monday morning at the same crossing where the 1995 bus-train crash occurred 30 years ago.
The Fox River Grove Police Department and Fox River Grove Fire Protection District responded around 10:59 a.m. Monday to the area of Route 14, also known as Northwest Highway, and Algonquin Road for a report of a train crash.
The Cary Fire Protection District and Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District were also called to assist but soon canceled.
Firefighters arrived and reported finding a car that had been struck by a train at the rail crossing along Algonquin Road, according to fire department radio traffic.
The car, a Lexus SUV, came to rest on the north side of the train tracks.
The driver of the car was being transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington in unknown condition, police said.
It is unclear if any passengers were in the SUV. No one on the train was reported to be injured.
Metra said that the crash involved Union Pacific Northwest line Train #646.
The train was scheduled to arrive Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago at 12:10 p.m. and remains stopped at the scene.
“The duration of this delay is unknown. Metra will provide updates as information becomes available,” the agency said.
The Metra Police Department was responding to the scene to assist in investigating the cause of the crash.
The incident occurred at the same intersection as the October 1995 bus-train crash that left seven students dead and another 24 injured.
This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
