Authorities are seeking the community’s help in locating the owners of two horses that were found wandering on a property near Woodstock early Monday morning.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 12:40 a.m. Monday to the 3100 block of Vermont Road in unincorporated Woodstock for an animal complaint.

A resident reported she found two horses wandering near her home, south of Secor Road, according to police radio traffic.

The woman said the two horses were contained on her property but she could not keep them.

Dispatchers checked addresses in the area for prior calls involving horses and did not find any.

Deputies also checked properties in the area and no one was aware of who the horses belonged to.

The sheriff’s office issued an alert around 2 a.m. Monday asking for the community’s help in locating the owners.

The two mares are roughly three to five years old. One of them is black and the other is buckskin.

A photo of the horses was not immediately available.

The sheriff’s office said the horses are being housed by a citizen in the area until authorities can locate the owners.

The owners of the animals are asked to call the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office at 815-338-2144.

The incident is the second loose animal incident in the past several days in McHenry County.

The McHenry County Department of Health said they are searching for the owner of a white male horse that was found running loose between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Thursday.

The horse was found near Route 176 and Millstream Road in unincorporated Marengo.

The horse is currently being housed at a private farm but the stray hold will end at the close of business on October 20, the health department said.

The owner of the horse is asked to call the McHenry County Animal Control and Adoption Center at 815-459-6222 as soon as possible.
