The bomb squad was called after a suspected explosive device was found on a resident’s property in unincorporated McHenry County near Woodstock, the sheriff said.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 4:30 p.m. Monday to the 16600 block of Kunde Road, which is southwest of Woodstock and northeast of Marengo, for a report of a suspicious item found on the property.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Communication Specialist Emily Matusek-Baker said the homeowner called to report he had discovered a small plastic box.

The item was described as a “small plastic box with a tube and a green fuse.”

The homeowner told deputies he had discovered the plastic box containing what appeared to be an explosive device while walking his property, Matusek-Baker said.

Matusek-Baker said it was unknown how the device got there or where it came from.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was called and arrived at the scene to complete an inspection of the device.

Matusek-Baker said it was determined that the device should be destroyed at the scene.

The bomb squad destroyed the device in a controlled explosion at the edge of the property.

The sheriff’s office and the bomb squad were on the scene for several hours into the evening on Monday.
