A pastor of two churches in Waukegan has been suspended after the Archdiocese announced an investigation into him regarding sexual misconduct and grooming accusations.

Archbishop of Chicago Cardinal Blase J. Cupich announced the news in a letter to members of Little Flower Parish in Waukegan on Saturday.

St. Anastasia Church and St. Dismas Church make up Little Flower Parish.

The Archdiocese received allegations against the pastor of the parish, Father Xamie Reyes, regarding grooming and sexual misconduct.

The allegations do not involve children but they do involve seminarians. “This is a very serious matter,” Cupich said.

Reyes will live away from the parish pending the outcome of an investigation into the charges.

Reverend Ismael Garcia, the current associate pastor, has been appointed as administrator of Little Flower Parish.

“Father Garcia knows the needs of your parish well and with the assistance of your Episcopal Vicar, Bishop Timothy O’Malley, will ensure that you continue to receive pastoral care,” Cupich said.

“I know that this is unsettling news, but I take seriously the responsibility to ensure those serving you are fit for ministry and that all are kept safe. I do appreciate your patience as we work to evaluate thoroughly these allegations,” Cupich said.

“Only by doing so can we remain true to our promise to keep everyone safe,” Cupich added.

The Archdiocese of Chicago said it takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and encourages anyone experiencing it to come forward. “They will be received with dignity and compassion.”

Information regarding reporting misconduct can be found on the archdiocesan website.

“I will inform you of any new developments and am grateful for your understanding. Please know the people of Little Flower Parish are in my prayers,” Cupich said.
