A 36-year-old man was hospitalized in serious condition after he was left heavily trapped when his minivan struck a large tractor near Hebron Monday evening, the sheriff said.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection District responded around 7:57 p.m. Monday to the area of Route 47 and Thayer Road in unincorporated Hebron for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Fire crews responding were advised that the crash involved a car and a tractor with a person trapped inside the car.
Police arrived and found the victim unconscious in the heavily damaged car.
The McHenry County Conservation District Police, Woodstock Fire/Rescue District and Wonder Lake Fire Protection District also responded to assist at the scene, which was located west of Route 47 on Thayer Road.
A preliminary investigation shows that a 2009 Honda Odyssey was traveling westbound on Thayer Road, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Honda collided with an Ecolo-Tiger 875 disk ripper attachment that was equipped to a Case 620 tractor, which had been traveling eastbound.
Sheriff’s officials said the Honda sustained significant damage and the trapped driver was seriously injured.
The driver, a 36-year-old Hebron man, was extricated by the fire department. A medical helicopter was requested but was unavailable.
He was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital McHenry where he is listed in serious condition.
The driver of the Case tractor, a 78-year-old Hebron man, was not injured, the sheriff’s office said.
Initial reports indicated the tractor was not at the immediate scene but the sheriff’s office has not confirmed whether the tractor remained at the scene or not.
Sheriff’s officials said the driver of the Honda was not wearing a seatbelt and alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash.
Thayer Road was shut down between Route 47 and McCauley Road during the investigation.
The crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit.
