Police say a woman was seriously injured after she became pinned underneath her car and a concrete wall on Route 47 in Lakewood following a domestic incident Saturday evening.
The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department and Lakewood Police Department responded around 11:34 p.m. Saturday to the area of Route 47 and Pleasant Valley Road in Lakewood for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Lakewood Police Chief Mike Roth said officers arrived and found a 49-year-old Arlington Heights woman who was trapped underneath a vehicle.
The woman was driving a 2017 Honda CR-V southbound on Route 47 between the two Route 176 split intersections.
Heavy rain was occurring at the time and the woman was involved in a domestic incident with her adult son, who was a passenger in the car, Roth said.
The actions of the son, a 24-year-old Arlington Heights man who suffers from behavioral issues, caused the woman to drive into the oncoming lane, Roth said.
She was forced to exit the car in a panic and misunderstood a safety feature on the car.
The woman thought opening the driver’s side car door would put the car into park but it did not and the car continued rolling, Roth said.
She became pinned on the left side between a stone wall and her Honda. She was halfway underneath the car.
The fire department used specialized equipment to lift and move the car off her.
A medical helicopter was placed on standby but did not respond as it was unavailable due to the weather conditions.
Roth said the woman was transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers contained the 24-year-old son and got him out of the car. He was also transported by ambulance to the hospital.
Route 47 was completely shut down for approximately two hours with the assistance of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
Charges are pending against the son, Roth said. His identity is being withheld until charges are filed.
