Police say a car involved in a hit-and-run apparently ran a red light and crashed into a school bus, sending the bus driver and the car driver to the hospital, in Gurnee.
The Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 4:22 p.m. Thursday to Route 41 and Grand Avenue for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Officers arrived and found a crash in the intersection involving a school bus and a silver Toyota Prius, according to Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor.
A preliminary investigation showed the school bus was traveling eastbound on Grand Avenue.
The bus was in the left turn lane to go northbound on Route 41, Gaylor said.
The bus proceeded through the intersection on a green arrow when it was struck on the side by the Toyota.
Witnesses reported that the Toyota was traveling southbound on Route 41 using the Grand Avenue exit ramp, Gaylor said.
Gaylor said the Toyota did not slow down before entering the intersection and collided with the school bus.
There were no children on the school bus at the time of the crash, which was occupied only by the driver.
The bus driver was transported to a local hospital in unknown condition and is expected to make a full recovery, Gaylor said.
The driver of the Toyota suffered several cuts to his face and was also transported by ambulance to the hospital for medical treatment.
Gaylor said a further investigation revealed that the same Toyota had been involved in a separate crash moments earlier at Route 41 and Delany Road.
The Toyota had rear-ended another vehicle before continuing southbound toward Grand Avenue.
No charges or citations have been announced. The cause of both crashes remains under investigation by the Gurnee Police Department.
