A newly released video captured a Lake Villa woman and mother of 11 being randomly punched in the head, causing her to collapse to the ground with serious injuries, in downtown Chicago.
Kathleen Miles, 56, of Lake Villa, was walking in the crosswalk at the intersection of Washington Street and Franklin Street in Chicago on August 19.
Miles was on the way to Union Station with a co-worker just after 5 p.m. when she was attacked by William Livingston, 31, of Chicago.
Surveillance video, obtained recently by CWBChicago through a Freedom of Information Act request, captured Livingston jogging from behind Miles and getting in between her and her co-worker.
Livingston suddenly punched Miles in the face, with no provocation or interaction, the video showed.
Miles’ body stiffened and she immediately collapsed to the ground. Livingston then appeared to take a fighting stance toward her co-worker.
Bystanders gathered around Miles, who was lying on the ground bleeding, and attempted to aid her as Livingston remained at the scene.
Brittany Miles, a stepdaughter of the victim, said a state senator was among those who came to her stepmother’s aid following the “brutal attack,” which changed the family’s world.
The senator wrapped a shirt around Miles’ head, which was bleeding after it hit the concrete.
The video showed the fire department arriving minutes later and Livingston still stood around watching them treat Miles, who was seriously injured.
Officers arrived shortly after the fire department and arrested Livingston at the scene.
He was initially charged with misdemeanors but court records show the charges have been upgraded to aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, a Class 3 felony, and three counts of aggravated battery in a public place, a Class 3 felony.
WGN News reported Miles is the mother of 11 children and grandmother of seven.
Brittany Miles said her stepmother’s face was shattered and she suffered a broken skull and fractured orbital bone.
The Chicago Police Department said Livingston has prior similar offenses.
He was charged with multiple felonies in 2022 after police say he struck and attempted to steal property from multiple women on February 8, 2022.
Livingston attacked a 30-year-old woman in the 700 block of South State Street around 12 p.m. and then targeted a 25-year-old woman 10 minutes later in the 0-100 block of East Van Buren Street, police said.
Two minutes later, he targeted another 25-year-old woman in the 0-100 block of East Jackson Street before finally targeting a 27-year-old woman and a 49-year-old woman in the 0-100 block of East Monroe Avenue at 12:22 p.m., police said.
Livingston has also previously been charged in other random attacks.
Records show Livingston, who has pleaded not guilty to his new charges, remains held in the Cook County Jail after a judge granted a petition to detain him.
A behavior clinic exam has been ordered in his case and Livingston is scheduled to appear in court again on December 5.
