A candlelight vigil is set for Monday evening for a 19-year-0ld man, who was a student athlete at a private Grayslake school, who died after a motorcycle crash in Grayslake.
A coroner’s investigation showed Nathan Levandowski, 19, of Lake Villa, died as a result of blunt force injuries from a vehicle crash, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.
The Grayslake Fire Protection District and Grayslake Police Department responded around 7 a.m. on October 9 to the area of the Grayslake Golf Course, 2150 North Drury Lane, for a report of a crash with injuries.
Fire crews arrived and reported finding a motorcyclist down off of the roadway.
Grayslake Police Chief Jeff Myhra said officers determined that the crash happened around 3:30 p.m. on October 8.
Levandowski was not found until the morning of October 9, approximately 16 hours later. His family had filed a missing person report the prior day.
He was located based on a ping from his cell phone that was conducted by his father, Myhra said.
The crash, which had no witnesses, occurred at the curve on Drury Lane south of the golf course.
The motorcycle, a Kawasaki 650 sport bike, and Levandowski left the roadway far enough that they were not visible to anyone driving along the road, Myhra said.
Myhra said Levandowski was wearing all of the appropriate safety equipment but still suffered critical injuries.
Paramedics transported him to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he remained until he died on Wednesday.
The Kawasaki was traveling eastbound on Drury Lane and failed to navigate the curve for unknown reasons.
The motorcycle struck the curb and exited the roadway where Levandowski and the motorcycle came to rest approximately 40 feet east of the road.
Myhra said there is no indication that any other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) responded to assist the Grayslake Police Department with the investigation. Drury Lane was shut down for several hours during the crash investigation.
Levandowski’s mother told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that her son was a homeschool graduate and played sports, including volleyball and soccer, at Westlake Christian Academy, a private Christian school in Grayslake serving students in preschool through 12th grade.
Westlake Christian Academy is hosting a candlelight vigil and time of worship to remember Levandowski and “find comfort together.”
The event will begin at 6 p.m. Monday at the school where attendees will gather for worship around a bonfire and share memories and words of comfort.
Counselors and the Lutheran Church Charities Comfort Dog Ministry Team will be present. “All who knew Nathan are welcome.”
