A student at Rosalind Franklin University in North Chicago was caught with two rifles and a handgun in his dorm room and allegedly attacked a police officer who tried to detain him.
Fernando Sanchez-Gonzalez, 30, of North Chicago, was charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, resisting a peace officer causing injury and unauthorized possession or storage of weapons.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Savannah Halcomb said the North Chicago Police Department was called on October 3 to assist security at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.
Sanchez-Gonzalez was on campus and ordered to obtain a mental health evaluation by the school but refused to do so.
Halcomb said Sanchez-Gonzalez spoke with a counselor and admitted he had guns inside his dorm room. Officers located two rifles in the room.
Sanchez-Gonzalez began getting angry after learning he was suspended from the university, Halcomb said.
Officers attempted to detain him and conduct a patdown. Sanchez-Gonzalez pulled away from an officer and struck the officer in the eye, Halcomb said.
The officer suffered redness around the eye and swelling around his cheek.
One of the rifles was loaded with six rounds and the other was unloaded, Halcomb said. A handgun was also seized.
The North Chicago Police Department obtained a firearm restraining order, which was granted by a Lake County judge, barring Sanchez-Gonzalez from possessing weapons following the incident.
Sanchez-Gonzalez was transported to the Lake County Courthouse in Waukegan for a First Appearance Court hearing and released as the charges are non-detainable under Illinois law.
Lake County Judge Stephen DeRue ordered Sanchez-Gonzalez to be placed on Level 3 pre-trial services monitoring and have no contact with the university, staying 500 feet away.
The judge also ordered Sanchez-Gonzalez not to possess any firearms or dangerous weapons.
Sanchez-Gonzalez is scheduled to appear in court again on November 13 for a preliminary hearing.
