A woman died after she suffered critical injuries when she was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street near the Walmart in Johnsburg Monday evening, authorities said.
The McHenry Township Fire Protection District and Johnsburg Police Department responded around 7:20 p.m. Monday to the area of Route 31, also known as Richmond Road, and Running Brook Farm Boulevard in Johnsburg for a vehicle crash with injuries.
McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief David Harwood said multiple 911 calls were received for a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle.
First responders arrived and found an adult female victim who was unconscious and not breathing, lying in the roadway.
Bystanders had not started CPR and the fire department began performing lifesaving measures, Harwood said.
A medical helicopter was placed on standby but canceled due to the woman’s condition being too unstable for air transport.
An ambulance rushed her to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry in critical condition, Harwood said.
The McHenry County Coroner’s Office said that the woman died in the hospital after arriving.
Her identity is being withheld pending an autopsy and notification to her family.
The pedestrian had been crossing Richmond Road in the area of the crosswalk when she was struck by a Subaru sedan, which was traveling southbound on Richmond Road at the southern part of the intersection.
The crash occurred at the entrance to the Walmart and led to Richmond Road being shut down southbound at Running Brook Farm and northbound traffic shut down at Shoppers Drive.
Harwood said that it is believed the woman was only struck by one vehicle but several other drivers witnessed the crash and their vehicles were stopped at the scene.
The road was closed for several hours while the Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) responded to conduct the investigation.
The driver and sole occupant of the Subaru, an adult male, was also transported by ambulance to the hospital, Harwood said. He was shaken up.
The Johnsburg Police Department has not yet released details on the cause or circumstances of the crash as of Tuesday morning.
