A driver was flown to the hospital in critical condition following a two-vehicle crash that seriously injured a second driver and resulted in a car striking a house near Marengo Wednesday morning.

The Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 7:46 a.m. Wednesday to the intersection of Route 23 and River Road in unincorporated Marengo for a report of a two-vehicle crash with injuries.

First responders arrived and found two heavily damaged vehicles, according to Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts Public Information Officer Alex Vucha.

One car came to rest in the intersection and the other came to rest against a small house on the northeast corner of the intersection.

The driver of the vehicle near the house was initially reported unconscious. Firefighters performed extrication to free the adult male victim, Vucha said.

A LifeNet medical helicopter was requested and landed at the scene. He was airlifted to a Rockford hospital in critical condition.

Vucha said the adult male driver of the second vehicle, which remained in the intersection, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Firefighters found the home was occupied at the time of the crash but no injuries were reported.

Minor damage was reported to the front porch of the home but no structural damage was reported on the residence itself, Vucha said.

Roads were shut down in all directions for a short time while the medical helicopter was on the ground. Fire crews left the scene just prior to 9 a.m.

The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District assisted at the scene and the Huntley Fire Protection District provided a change of quarters unit during the incident.

The cause and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, which has not yet released details on the incident.
