One person was killed and a second person was injured after a Metra train crashed into a vehicle in Hainesville on Thursday afternoon.
Battalion Chief Jay VandeBerg of the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District said rescue personnel were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash involving a single vehicle and a train near the intersection of Belvidere Road and Centre Drive in Hainesville at about 12:06 p.m. Thursday.
VandeBerg said initial reports indicated a collision took place between a single passenger vehicle and a train on the tracks.
Upon arrival, emergency personnel confirmed a single vehicle was involved and sustained significant damage in the crash with the train, VandeBerg said.
Fire and EMS crews extricated one occupant from the vehicle, VandeBerg said.
That person was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in critical condition, VandeBerg said.
VandeBerg said a second patient was transported from the scene in stable condition.
Chief Deputy Lake County Coroner Steve Newton said the unidentified male in his early 50s, who was transported from the scene of the crash, was pronounced dead in the emergency room at Condell Medical Center.
Newton said an autopsy on the victim is scheduled for Friday morning.
Metra spokeswoman Meg Reilly said Metra trains are halted between Grayslake and Fox Lake on the Milwaukee District North line to allow Metra Police an opportunity to investigate the crash.
Reilly said the train left Chicago at 10:32 a.m. and was due to stop in Round Lake at 12:02 before the crash took place.
VendeBerg said the GRLFPD was assisted on the scene by the Grayslake Police Department, Metra Police Department, and Round Lake Beach Police Department.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Metra Police Department, Reilly said.
