Lake County Coroner officials have identified a man who was killed when his vehicle was hit by an outbound Metra train Thursday afternoon in Hainesville.
Following an autopsy on Friday, Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek identified the person killed in the crash as Pete Kostopoulos, 51, of Elk Grove Village.
Banek said preliminary autopsy results indicate that Kostopoulos died of blunt force injuries as a result of the crash.
Battalion Chief Jay VandeBerg of the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District said rescue personnel were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash involving a single vehicle and a train near the intersection of Belvidere Road and Centre Drive in Hainesville at about 12:06 p.m. Thursday.
VandeBerg said emergency personnel confirmed upon arrival that a single vehicle was involved and sustained significant damage in the crash with the train.
Fire and EMS crews extricated one occupant from the vehicle, VandeBerg said.
That person was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in critical condition, VandeBerg said.
VandeBerg said a second patient was transported from the scene in stable condition.
Newton said Thursday the unidentified male in his early 50s, who was transported from the scene of the crash, was pronounced dead in the emergency room at Condell Medical Center.
That person was identified on Friday as Kostopoulos.
Metra spokeswoman Meg Reilly said Metra trains were halted for several hours between Grayslake and Fox Lake on the Milwaukee District North line to allow Metra Police an opportunity to investigate the crash.
VendeBerg said the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District was assisted on the scene by the Grayslake Police Department, Metra Police Department, and Round Lake Beach Police Department.
The incident remains under investigation by the Metra Police Department, Reilly said.
