No injuries were reported, but a residence was deemed uninhabitable after a fire caused significant damage to a home in Round Lake Heights on Wednesday, authorities said.
Fire personnel from the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District were called to the house fire in the 800 block of Tomahawk Trail at approximately 1:49 p.m. Wednesday, officials said.
Fire crews on the scene reported heavy smoke and fire emanating from the rear of the two-story home, officials said.
The fire alarm was upgraded to a Working Still Level to bring in additional resources, officials said.
Everyone was out of the home when firefighters arrived on scene, officials said.
Officials said no injuries to people, pets, or firefighters were reported.
The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes, officials said.
However, extensive damage left the home uninhabitable, officials said.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and the Round Lake Heights Police Department.
Round Lake firefighters were assisted at the scene by fire crews from Fox Lake, Grayslake, Lake Villa, and Wauconda. Personnel from Antioch and McHenry were brought in to handle station coverage for Round Lake, officials said.
The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District urges residents to ensure cigarette butts are snuffed out before throwing them away, adding that dousing the butts in water or burying them in sand is the best way to ensure cigarettes are completely out.
