Fire officials are reminding residents to check their smoke detector batteries as clocks “fall back” after a fire broke out on the front porch of a Round Lake Beach home Sunday evening.

The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and Round Lake Beach Police Department responded at 8:48 p.m. Sunday to the 2500 block of Lancaster Lane in Round Lake Beach for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived in four minutes and found a minor fire at the front of the house that was already brought under control by Round Lake Beach police officers, Greater Round Lake Battalion Fire Chief Jay VandeBerg said.

Firefighters fully extinguished the fire and pulled open parts of the siding and ceiling at the front porch to ensure the fire did not spread to other parts of the home.

No one was injured and the fire was contained to the front porch area of the home, VandeBerg said.

A fire investigator from the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded to the scene to determine what caused the fire.

“Our crews did a wonderful job – they had a fast attack on it,” VandeBerg said.

“We have a great response set up with our neighbors from Grayslake, Fox Lake, Lake Villa and Wauconda [fire departments], so all of them responded in treating this as if it were a major fire. We were able to send everyone home once we determined there were no major problems,” VandeBerg added.

Fire officials are reminding residents to check their smoke detectors and replace the batteries with the end of daylight saving time on Sunday.

“It’s that time of the year,” VandeBerg said. “Change your clocks, change your batteries – hopefully people are starting to get the 10-year batteries on their smoke detectors and be fire safe coming up with the Thanksgiving season,” VandeBerg added.
