A funeral was held Tuesday evening for a 23-year-old woman who died after she was struck by a vehicle near the Walmart in Johnsburg, with her family describing her as a “kind and caring soul.”

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District and Johnsburg Police Department responded around 7:20 p.m. on October 27 to the area of Route 31, also known as Richmond Road, and Running Brook Farm Boulevard in Johnsburg for a vehicle crash with injuries.

McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief David Harwood said multiple 911 calls were received for a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle.

First responders arrived and found an adult female victim who was unconscious and not breathing, lying in the roadway.

McHenry County Coroner Dr. Michael Rein identified her as Abigale Fugett, 23, of Johnsburg.

Bystanders had not started CPR and the fire department began performing lifesaving measures on Fugett, Harwood said.

A medical helicopter was placed on standby but canceled due to the woman’s condition being too unstable for air transport.

An ambulance rushed Fugett to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry in critical condition, Harwood said.

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office said that the woman died in the hospital after arriving.

Fugett had been crossing Richmond Road in the area of the crosswalk when she was struck by the Subaru sedan, which was traveling southbound on Richmond Road at the southern part of the intersection, Harwood said.

The crash occurred at the entrance to the Walmart and led to Richmond Road being shut down southbound at Running Brook Farm and northbound traffic being shut down at Shoppers Drive.

Harwood said that it is believed Fugett was only struck by one vehicle but several other drivers witnessed the crash and their vehicles were stopped at the scene.

The road was closed for several hours while the Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) responded to conduct the investigation.

The driver and sole occupant of the Subaru, an adult male, was also transported by ambulance to the hospital after being shaken up, Harwood said.

Johnsburg Police Chief Jason Greenwald said the driver is cooperating with the investigation.

The woman lived at an apartment building on the corner of the intersection where she was hit by the car.

Fugett’s family described the woman as a “kind and caring soul” who enjoyed spending time with family and her boyfriend.

“Abby loved to laugh and taught everyone around her unconditional love. She was not afraid to express herself and her compassion for others with a bright smile that would light up any room. If she loved you, you knew it,” her obituary said.
