A video captured the moment a minivan appeared to intentionally crash into a vehicle driven by federal immigration agents, leading to an agent shooting a pepper ball gun at it as it fled in Park City.
The incident happened Friday afternoon and a video showed cars honking their horns and following a U.S. Border Patrol convoy.
The video showed a light-colored Chrysler Town and Country rear-ending a white GMC Yukon, which had federal immigration agents inside, as the two vehicles were in motion making a left turn at an intersection in Park City.
The GMC immediately stopped and agents quickly exited the car as the Chrysler reversed and sped away in the other direction.
One agent fired a pepper ball gun into the back of the fleeing suspect vehicle.
The Chrysler then crashed into another vehicle as it tried fleeing. Federal agents left the scene as bystanders yelled at them, honked their horns and followed the GMC with the agents inside.
Around the same time, another video captured a woman with children in her car attempting to drive down a street that federal agents had blocked off in Park City.
Agents yelled at the woman to stop as she drove forward at them and one agent pointed a pepper ball gun at the car. One of the children in the backseat was seen pleading with an agent to “don’t do anything please.”
The female driver yelled at the agents and a bystander intervened to diffuse the situation. One agent could be heard saying the woman was “going all crazy” with kids in the car.
The incidents came on the same day that U.S. Border Patrol was spotted roaming throughout Waukegan, making arrests, leading to confrontations with residents.
The agents were near Glen Flora Elementary School, the Home Depot and in downtown Waukegan, among other places. Agents were also on foot in an alley near Clayton Street and Genesee Street.
A witness reported two arrests were made by the agents at Cribb Fine Foods, 626 Franklin Street in Waukegan.
Waukegan Third Ward Alderman Juan A. Martinez said he was driving back to work when he was confronted by federal agents on Baldwin Avenue in Waukegan.
The agents stopped their vehicle in front of him, approached his vehicle and pointed guns at him as he was sitting behind the wheel.
“I will be honest: I felt fear. I am a proud Latino leader, but no one should have to experience that kind of intimidation, especially from those sworn to uphold the law,” Martinez said.
“I am deeply shaken, but I am also more determined than ever to stand with my community,” he said.
Martinez filed a police report with the department and they are conducting an investigation into the incident.
U.S. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino was spotted with other U.S. Border Patrol agents at the Exxon gas station at Glen Rock Avenue and Belvidere Road in Waukegan on Friday afternoon.
Bovino is a high-ranking official with the U.S. Border Patrol. He is the commander tasked with leading the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration crackdown in the Chicago area.
Bovino purchased drinks at the gas station before walking outside and playing rock-paper-scissors with another agent.
A bystander said, “This is not a joke,” as Bovino, who was smiling and laughing, and the other agent played the game.
A video captured the sound of motorists blaring their horns in the area to warn others about the immigration agents’ presence as bystanders yelled at the convoy of agents.
