An elderly couple was hospitalized after they were extricated from an SUV that rolled over at a toll plaza on a ramp from Interstate 94 near Libertyville Tuesday evening.
The Illinois State Police and Libertyville Fire Department responded around 9:08 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Interstate 94 and Route 137 in unincorporated Libertyville for a vehicle crash with injuries and entrapment.
Emergency crews arrived and found a black BMW SUV that had rolled over on the ramp from eastbound Interstate 94 to Route 137, also known as Buckley Road, according to Illinois State Police.
A trooper at the scene said the BMW struck a concrete barrier at Illinois Tollway Plaza 20 and rolled over onto its passenger side.
The driver and passenger, an elderly couple, were trapped inside the car but were reported to be conscious.
The driver was an 88-year-old Libertyville man and the passenger was a 76-year-old Libertyville woman, state police said.
Firefighters had to remove both occupants from the vehicle. They first removed the driver and then the passenger.
The driver and passenger were both transported by ambulances to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Lake Forest Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
State police said their injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening.
There was a brief lane closure in the crash lane until a tow truck responded and removed the car.
The crash remains under investigation and no citations or charges have been announced.
