A driver was able to escape after their car burst into flames and became heavily engulfed, causing Washington Street to be shut down on the border of Waukegan and Park City Thursday evening.

The Gurnee Fire Department and Park City Police Department responded around 5:20 p.m. Thursday to the area of Washington Street and Teske Boulevard in Park City for a report of a vehicle fire.

Gurnee Fire Department Battalion Chief James Gramer said firefighters arrived and located the incident on Washington Street just east of LeBaron Street, which is on the border of Park City and Waukegan.

Fire crews reported a car heavily engulfed in flames, Gramer said. The fire appeared to have started in the engine compartment.

Firefighters pulled a hose line and quickly extinguished the fire. Both eastbound lanes on Washington Street were shut down.

A tow truck responded and removed the car from the scene.

The vehicle was left a complete loss. The cause of the fire remains unknown, Gramer said.

The police department and the owner were investigating further as to the cause of the fire.
