Firefighters were able to stop a fire from spreading to homes after nearly four acres of marshland caught on fire near Cary Saturday afternoon, fire officials said.
The Cary Fire Protection District responded around 3:13 p.m. Saturday to the area of West Rawson Bridge Road and Crystal Lake Road in unincorporated Cary for an outdoor smoke investigation call.
Cary Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said an additional 911 caller reported heavy smoke in the 6300 block of West Rawson Bridge Road.
Firefighters arrived and found smoke coming from the rear of a home in the 6300 block of West Rawson Bridge Road.
Fire crews proceeded to the backyard to investigate and located heavy fire traveling through the cattails behind the residence and extending into the surrounding marshland, Vucha said.
Hose lines were deployed and portable water supplies were brought to the area to control the progression of the fire.
Vucha said a rural water supply operation was proactively established at the roadway due to the unknown amount of water that would be needed.
Additional brush fire apparatus and manpower were requested from the Fox River Grove Fire Protection District and the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District.
The fire was considered under control within 90 minutes, Vucha said.
Nearly four acres of limited-access marshland were consumed by fire in total.
Firefighters began clearing the scene shortly after 6 p.m. after extinguishing remaining hidden fires.
“Cary Fire appreciates the assistance from the Fox River Grove Fire Protection District, the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District, and our dispatchers,” Vucha said.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
