A man was found unresponsive and is in critical condition after police say he was struck by a pickup truck while standing in the roadway on Grand Avenue in Waukegan Thursday morning.

A Waukegan police officer was on routine patrol around 5:20 a.m. Thursday in the area of Grand Avenue and Lewis Avenue in Waukegan, according to Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Craig Neal.

The officer located a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian just west of the intersection on Grand Avenue.

Neal said the officer observed a blue Dodge Ram pickup truck stopped in the left turn lane facing eastbound on Grand Avenue.

The officer exited his squad to investigate further and observed the driver of the Dodge standing over a male pedestrian.

The pedestrian was lying on his back in the middle of the left turn lane, Neal said.

The pedestrian was unresponsive and suffered serious injuries in the crash.

The Waukegan Fire Department was requested to the scene and an ambulance transported the victim to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

A family member of the victim said Sunday that the man remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The driver told officers he was driving eastbound on Grand Avenue before merging into the left turn lane to head northbound on Lewis Avenue.

Neal said the driver reported he suddenly noticed a male subject, who was wearing dark clothing, standing in the middle of the left turn lane.

The driver reported he was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision with the pedestrian.
