A woman had to be extricated from her car after she drove into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle, causing her car to roll over and block Deerfield Road in Deerfield.
The Deerfield Police Department and Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District responded around 1:03 p.m. Saturday to the area of Deerfield Road and Robert York Avenue for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries and entrapment.
Fire crews arrived on the scene and reported a two-vehicle crash with one vehicle rolled over on its side.
The crash occurred directly under the Metra train bridge and both vehicles were blocking all of Deerfield Road.
Deerfield Deputy Police Chief Brian Budny said a Honda Accord was traveling eastbound on Deerfield Road and a Ford Escape was traveling westbound on Deerfield Road.
The Honda crossed over the center line into the opposite lane of travel and the driver of the Ford was unable to veer out of the way due to the narrow roadway under the viaduct, Budny said.
The two cars collided in an offset head-on crash and the Honda rolled over onto its side.
There were two adult occupants in the Ford and they were uninjured but evaluated by paramedics.
The driver and sole occupant of the Honda was left trapped in the car after it rolled over and firefighters performed extrication to free her, Budny said.
The adult female was then transported to a local hospital by ambulance for non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers shut down Deerfield Road between Robert York Avenue and Chestnut Street until firefighters transported the woman and tow trucks removed the vehicles.
The driver of the Honda was cited for causing the crash, Budny said.
