A worker was rescued by the fire department from scaffolding after he suffered a medical emergency at a school that is under renovation in Highland Park, fire officials said.

The Highland Park Fire Department and Highland Park Police Department responded around 8:30 a.m. Friday to 1900 Stratford Road for a report of a fall victim.

Emergency radio traffic indicated a worker had fallen approximately 10 feet and was unconscious.

Highland Park Fire Chief Joe Schrage said it was later learned that the victim had not fallen but suffered a medical emergency.

The adult male was on scaffolding when he suffered the event, Schrage said.

Coworkers noticed the man experiencing the medical event and leaned him down on his back on the scaffolding.

Schrage said firefighters had to use a stokes basket to rescue the worker from the scaffolding.

Firefighters had removed the victim and transferred him to an awaiting ambulance for transport to the hospital by around 8:50 a.m.

Schrage said he could not provide further details on the man’s condition due to privacy laws.

It appeared the workers present were bricklayers. Schrage said the building is Sherwood Elementary School, which is currently under extensive renovation.

Students of the school have been temporarily relocated to 2031 Sheridan Road while the renovations are being completed.
