A police officer was seriously injured while trying to capture a domestic battery suspect, leading to a six-hour standoff that ended in the suspect’s arrest in Buffalo Grove.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Colleen McConnell said a woman called 911 on November 1 to report that her boyfriend, identified as Jorge Ferrer, 45, of Buffalo Grove, was in her house in Buffalo Grove, threw her to the ground and stomped on her.
The victim reported she was walking on foot to Walgreens to flee Ferrer but he was following her.
Officers arrived and found Ferrer following the woman. He immediately fled on foot towards the house with officers giving chase, McConnell said.
Ferrer got to the front door and an officer was halfway through the door when he slammed the door on the officer’s left arm while applying pressure to the door, McConnell said.
The officer’s arm and thumb were trapped in the door, causing significant pain and injury.
The officer was eventually able to pull his arm out of the door. He had to be transported to a local hospital.
McConnell said doctors reported that he had suffered either a torn or sprained labrum. The officer also suffered lacerations to his right arm during the struggle.
Scans were performed, his arm was placed in a sling and he was given medicine for pain.
Ferrer refused to exit the residence for approximately six hours, leading to a standoff that ended with his arrest, McConnell said.
Officers interviewed the female victim of the domestic battery and found she had a visible welt to her hairline above her right eye that was the size of a golf ball.
She said her boyfriend accused her of cheating on him and started a verbal argument, which intensified, causing her to go to the front door to leave the home, McConnell said.
Ferrer threw her to the ground to prevent her from leaving and began repeatedly stomping on the victim’s rib cage, McConnell said.
McConnell said the man then stomped on the victim’s face, causing her significant pain and leading to the welt on her forehead.
She was able to escape and run from the house with Ferrer chasing her. McConnell said the victim came upon two construction workers and told them about the attack.
The victim also told officers there is a history of domestic violence in the relationship with Ferrer recently strangling her, McConnell said.
Police had previously been called to the house in March for a domestic disturbance and Ferrer was taken into custody on outstanding warrants.
He is currently on probation for a drug case in Lake County and on supervision for a DUI in Cook County.
Ferrer was charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer causing great bodily harm, unlawful restraint, resisting a peace officer causing injury and two counts of domestic battery.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Ferrer pending trial, arguing he poses a real and present danger to the victim, and Lake County Judge Michael Nerheim granted the petition during a detention hearing.
Ferrer remains held in the Lake County Jail and he is scheduled to appear in court again on Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.
