Two people had to be extricated after an SUV lost control and crashed into another car, leaving five people hospitalized, on Route 41 in Gurnee, police said.

The Gurnee Fire Department and Gurnee Police Department responded around 1:55 p.m. Monday to the area of Route 41 and Grand Avenue for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Fire crews arrived and found a two-vehicle crash with moderate damage in the northbound lanes of Route 41 just north of Grand Avenue.

Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor said an investigation showed a 2014 Kia Soul was traveling northbound on Route 41 in the left lane over Grand Avenue.

A 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling directly behind the Kia.

Gaylor said the Chevrolet merged into the right lane and accelerated, at which point the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The Chevrolet struck the passenger side of the Kia, which was still in the left lane.

The collision pushed the Kia into the concrete center divider on Route 41 just north of Grand Avenue, Gaylor said.

Firefighters extricated the Kia’s driver and passenger and transported them to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver and two passengers in the Chevrolet were also transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center and are expected to make a full recovery.

The driver of the Chevrolet was issued a citation for causing the crash, Gaylor said.
