A child was hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in a crosswalk across Route 41 in Highland Park Thursday evening, authorities said.
The Highland Park Police Department and Highland Park Fire Department responded around 5:22 p.m. Thursday to the area of Route 41 and Park Avenue for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Highland Park Communications Manager Amanda Bennett said officers arrived to find a collision involving a single vehicle and a bicyclist at the intersection.
A preliminary investigation showed that the bicyclist, a juvenile on a mountain bike, was traveling west across Route 41.
A mid-sized SUV traveling southbound on Route 41 had stopped at the red light at Park Avenue, Bennett said.
The SUV proceeded through the intersection when the light switched from red to green, at which time it struck the child.
Bennett said the driver stopped immediately and 911 was contacted. No injuries were reported in the vehicle.
The victim was conscious and able to communicate with first responders about their injuries at the scene.
Paramedics transported the child to Endeavor Health Evanston Hospital for evaluation and treatment, Bennett said.
A family member told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the child is a teenager and they are expected to be released from the hospital on Friday.
Witnesses said the child was wearing a helmet and crossing in the crosswalk and had almost made it across the street when he was struck.
Southbound Route 41 was shut down temporarily and traffic was diverted west on Park Avenue.
Police have not said whether any citations or charges have been issued.
