The sheriff is investigating after a masked suspect was seen on surveillance video trying to break into a house in Wonder Lake, prompting a police search Saturday evening.
The incident happened around 6:49 p.m. Saturday on Walnut Drive in Wonder Lake.
A Ring surveillance video camera recorded a younger white male walking onto a residential property and onto the front door porch.
The male opened the screen door and attempted to open the door to the home, the video showed.
The male was unsuccessful in gaining access as the door was locked, the resident said.
The male immediately ran from the front door and down the street.
The resident said that while the suspect acted alone, there were 5-6 other people down the street with the suspect.
The suspect was wearing black sweatpants, a black shiesty ski mask and was shirtless.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office was notified and responded to the area to search for the suspect.
The sheriff’s office was already nearby investigating a report from a female resident in the 3700 block of Fawn Grove Street who heard a loud bang by her garage and saw a male who yelled an expletive at her and her husband when they saw him.
It is unclear whether the two incidents are linked. Sheriff’s deputies, including a canine unit, responded to the Walnut Drive residence and searched the area.
The sheriff’s office has not released information on the attempted break-in or said whether the suspect was taken into custody.
