A former Lake County Sheriff Deputy who died earlier this week is being remembered as a devoted father, husband, son, and committed Boy Scout.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced early Wednesday that they were saddened to learn of the passing of retired Lake County Deputy Sheriff Mark Hobson, 65, of Libertyville.
According to his obituary from Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, Hobson grew up in Mundelein and joined the Boy Scouts of America in his youth.
His love for the organization led to a lifetime commitment to the organization, and he rose in rank to Eagle Scout and became a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow.
As an adult in scouting, he became an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 71 and was active in both the Wilderness Engineering Society and the Tamarack Social Club. He also spent countless volunteer hours at Camp Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan in Pearson, WI, the obit reads.
Hobson graduated from Mundelein High School in 1978 and attended the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology with an emphasis in Deviance and Social Control and Family and Socialization.
After college, Mark spent his entire 30-year career in law enforcement, and spent the majority of his service as a Deputy with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said he worked previously in the Lake County Jail, Lake County Periodic Imprisonment, Lake County Courthouse, as a patrol officer, and with the detective bureau.
His favorite position was serving as a detective with the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group (LCMEG), where he worked as an undercover narcotics agent and supervisor, officials said.
“His work made a lasting impact on the safety of our community and those he served alongside,” the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Outside of work, Hobson loved scuba diving with his wife, cheering on the Chicago Bears, biking, smoking meat or a great cigar, working on his 1952 Studebaker truck with his son, and giving his time and talent at both community and religious functions, the obituary reads.
Hobson is survived by his wife Michelle, his daughter Cassandra, and his son Christian, the obituary reads.
He also leaves behind two brothers, a sister, and a grandson.
A visitation for Hobson is scheduled from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, December 1, at Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, 120 W. Park Avenue in Libertyville.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 121 E. Maple Avenue in Libertyville. A private interment will follow.
The funeral will be livestreamed on the funeral home website at www.burnettdane.com.
