An Elgin man has been denied release from McHenry County jail after officers arrested him with more than 32 grams of cocaine in his possession, authorities said.
Michael Mealy, 36, of Elgin, will be held until trial on a Class X charge of Unlawful Possession with the Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance and a Class 1 felony count of Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, said McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi Freese.
McHenry County Sheriff’s Office deputies were in contact with Mealy regarding a separate incident when the Elgin man provided a false name to deputies because he had an active warrant out of Wisconsin, Freese said.
Mealy was taken into custody by police and searched, Freese said.
During the search, sheriff’s deputies recovered approximately 32.3 grams of a substance that presumptively tested positive for cocaine from Mealy, Freese said.
In addition, Freese said the cocaine was packaged in a variety of weights.
Police also recovered a digital scale with white powder residue and United States currency, Freese said.
Mealy was charged with and appeared in front of McHenry County Judge Justin Hansen on Tuesday.
Hansen ordered Mealy held because the judge found that there were no conditions or combinations of conditions that the court could impose to keep the community safe, Freese said.
Mealy’s is due back in court on December 2.
