One person walking along railroad tracks near Ingleside was killed after being hit by a Metra train late Saturday night, authorities said.
Metra Spokeswoman Meg Reile said the unidentified male was walking on the train tracks near the Ingleside Metra station when he was hit by Milwaukee District North outbound train 2623 at about 10:20 p.m. Saturday.
It’s unknown at this time why the person was walking on the tracks, Reile said.
The incident remains under investigation, she said.
Fox Lake Fire Protection District Chief Ed Lescher said firefighters were called to the Ingleside train station after the pedestrian was struck by a train at about 10:20 p.m.
Lescher said the victim was trapped under the train when firefighters arrived on the scene.
He said the person was extracted, then transported via ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in critical condition.
Lake County Deputy Coroner Steve Newton confirmed Sunday that the person died after arriving at the hospital.
He said the identity of the person is unknown at this time, Newton said.
Reile said Milwaukee District North Line train 2623 was cancelled following the incident.
She said Milwaukee District North Line trains 2622 and 2627 were delayed by approximately two hours Saturday night and early Sunday while police investigated the incident.
