Three people were seriously injured after a semi-truck jackknifed on Route 12 near Fox Lake in the heavy snowfall on Saturday, hitting a pickup truck and two other vehicles before coming to a stop.

Fox Lake Fire Protection District Chief Ed Lescher said rescue personnel were called to the 37500 block of Route 12 near Lake Vista Terrace at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday for the jackknifed semi-truck.

He said the semi was heading southbound on Route 12 when it attempted to brake, causing the trailer of the truck to jackknife into the oncoming lane.

Lescher said the weather and heavy snowfall seemed to have played a role in the crash.

In total, there were four cars involved in the crash, and the driver of the pickup truck had to be extracted from his vehicle.

Four ambulances were called to the scene of the crash, Lescher said.

Ultimately, three people were transported from the scene of the crash to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

It remains unknown how long the roadway was shut down while the incident was tended to.
