The coroner has released the identity of a 22-year-old man who died after being hit by a Metra train in Fox Lake during a snowstorm Saturday evening.
The Fox Lake Fire Protection District, Fox Lake Police Department and Metra Police Department responded around 10:20 p.m. Saturday to the Ingleside Metra station in the area of Rollins Road and Washington Street for a crash with injuries.
Metra Spokeswoman Meg Reile said a male was walking on the train tracks near the Metra station when he was hit by Milwaukee District North outbound Train #2623.
Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek identified the victim on Tuesday as Richard Hayes II, 22, of Ingleside.
It is unknown at this time why Hayes was walking on the tracks, Reile said.
Fox Lake Fire Protection District Chief Ed Lescher said firefighters were called to the train station after the pedestrian was struck by a train.
Lescher said Hayes was trapped under the train when firefighters arrived on the scene.
He said Hayes was extracted and transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in critical condition.
Banek said that Hayes died in the emergency room of the hospital shortly after arriving.
Reile said Milwaukee District North Line Train 2623 was cancelled following the incident.
Milwaukee District North Line Trains 2622 and 2627 were delayed by approximately two hours Saturday evening and early Sunday while police investigated the incident.
An autopsy performed Monday by the coroner’s office showed Hayes died from blunt force injuries as a result of the collision, Banek said.
The incident remains under investigation by the Metra Police Department and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
