Multiple suspects burglarized numerous cars parked at homes near Gurnee during the overnight hours and the suspects smashed windows of some vehicles that they targeted.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was first notified of a burglary around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Grandwood Park area in unincorporated Gurnee.
Deputies responded to a burglary to motor vehicle after the window of a car was smashed and items were stolen, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.
Deputies on scene found two additional vehicles that had been forcefully entered.
The suspects had broken windows to those vehicles and also stole property from them, Covelli said.
An additional five unlocked vehicles appeared to have been rummaged through in the area.
Covelli said sheriff’s detectives are investigating and reviewing video surveillance in the area.
Detectives are still attempting to make contact and notify some of the victims.
Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor said the Gurnee Police Department had not received any reports of car burglaries in incorporated Gurnee as of late Wednesday morning.
Residents online reported that the suspects targeted cars on Grandwood Drive in unincorporated Gurnee as well as the Ravinia Woods subdivision in Gurnee.
Surveillance video captured at least three suspects running from house to house pulling on car door handles.
The sheriff’s office says it is important for residents to lock their car doors when the car is unattended.
Unoccupied cars should not be left running and spare keys or key fobs should not be left in unoccupied vehicles.
Motorists should also remove valuables from their vehicles and keep residential exterior lighting on during overnight hours.
Residents are also recommended to consider video surveillance cameras.
Anyone who spots suspicious activity should always call 911 immediately.
