The weather service has issued a winter weather advisory for Lake and McHenry counties ahead of several inches of snow expected on Sunday in the Chicagoland area.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a winter weather advisory early Saturday morning for McHenry, Lake, Kane, DuPage, Kendall, Cook and Will counties.
A period of accumulating snow is expected late Saturday through Sunday morning, the NWS said.
Total snow accumulation across northeastern Illinois is expected to be between two and six inches.
The highest amounts of snow are expected to occur north of Interstate 80, with three to six inches possible, the NWS said.
Some areas south of Interstate 80 may also see a wintry mix.
The winter weather is set to begin at midnight and continue until 9 a.m. Sunday, the advisory said.
Motorists should plan for hazardous road conditions if traveling late Saturday through Sunday morning.
The NWS said multiple rounds of wintry precipitation are possible through next week.
There is a possibility of lingering lake effect snow in the morning on Monday and gusty snow showers on Wednesday.
