Police say they have cited a driver who struck and injured a woman while she was walking her two dogs in a crosswalk, killing one of the animals, in Lake Forest.
The Lake Forest Fire Department and Lake Forest Police Department responded around 12:30 p.m. Thursday to the intersection of Green Bay Road and Old Elm Road for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Lake Forest Fire Department Deputy Chief Chris Roberts said initial reports indicated a vehicle had struck a pedestrian.
Lake Forest Police Department Deputy Chief Kevin Zelk said a woman had been struck by an Acura SUV while walking her two dogs.
The driver, also an adult female, remained at the scene and cooperated with first responders, Roberts said.
Zelk said an investigation determined the pedestrian, a Lake Forest woman in her 60s, was walking the dogs westbound on Old Elm Road.
She was in the crosswalk on Green Bay Road when the Acura SUV turned left from Old Elm Road onto northbound Green Bay Road.
The pedestrian and one of the dogs were struck by the vehicle.
A Lake Forest Fire Department ambulance transported the female pedestrian to Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Roberts said one of the dogs “sadly” did not survive and was pronounced dead.
The second dog was uninjured and ran from the scene before being safely captured by a bystander.
“The Lake Forest Fire Department extends its thoughts to all those affected,” Roberts said.
The driver of the Acura, a Lake Forest woman in her 70s, told officers she did not see the pedestrian and the dogs in the crosswalk, Zelk said.
Witnesses confirmed to officers that the pedestrian was in the crosswalk at the time of the collision.
The driver was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and given a future court date.
