The National Weather Service is warning about the potential for freezing rain that could lead to dangerous driving conditions in parts of Lake and McHenry counties Tuesday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) said there is a potential for a glaze of ice to occur early Tuesday evening, though confidence is not high.
Rain is expected to fall for a few hours and areas where air or pavement temperatures may still be at or below freezing could see the icy conditions, the NWS said.
The freezing rain could lead to hazardous driving conditions, primarily in far northern Illinois.
Part of Lake County, most of McHenry County and all of Winnebago County are at risk.
Chicago was initially under the threat of icy conditions on Monday but new projections no longer show the city at risk for ice.
The timing for the threat of a glaze of ice is between 5-8 p.m., the NWS said.
The NWS said that Wednesday morning’s commute may be affected by gusty snow showers and squalls.
Gusts of 40+ mph and localized accumulations of 0.5-1 inch will move northwest to southeast across the Chicagoland area.
Very low visibility, hazardous travel and commute impacts are possible.
Bitterly cold conditions are expected this weekend with wind chills as cold as -25 degrees on Saturday.
