Deerfield Road was shut down after a box truck struck a viaduct bridge and became stuck in Deerfield in a spot where many oversized trucks have crashed in recent years.
The Deerfield Police Department responded just before 8 a.m. Friday to a truck that struck the viaduct on Deerfield Road.
Officers shut down Deerfield Road between Waukegan Road and Chestnut Street.
The yellow box truck was traveling westbound on Deerfield Road when it struck the underside of the Metra viaduct. The bridge and the train tracks did not appear to be damaged.
The driver of the truck was uninjured but the truck sustained significant damage.
Ernie’s Wrecker Service was called to the scene to remove the stuck vehicle.
It took approximately 45 minutes to an hour for Ernie’s to remove the vehicle before officers were able to reopen Deerfield Road.
The truck was relocated to a side street and hooked up to a tow truck before being transported back to Ernie’s Auto and Truck Center.
The crash occurred in a spot where there have been repeated incidents involving oversized vehicles striking the viaduct.
Numerous signs are posted in the area warning motorists of the 11-foot-9-inch clearance. “If this bridge could talk…” Ernie’s Wrecker Service said.
In April, a semi-tractor-trailer truck hit the viaduct and the trailer, which was lodged underneath, sustained significant damage.
A truck crashed into the same viaduct in late December 2024 and caused Metra trains to be delayed and vehicle traffic to be shut down.
A semi-trailer was damaged after becoming stuck underneath the viaduct, resulting in traffic being blocked in February 2024.
