A man was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries after he was ejected during a rollover crash that shut down all lanes of Interstate 90 near Marengo Monday evening.

The Hampshire Fire Protection District and Illinois State Police responded around 7:35 p.m. Monday to Interstate 90 in the area of mile marker 34 for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Hampshire Fire Protection District Chief David Schmidt said the crash occurred in the westbound lanes west of Harmony Road.

Schmidt said a 911 caller reported that someone had been ejected during the crash.

Fire crews arrived to find a rolled-over vehicle on the right shoulder and a victim on the left shoulder, Schmidt said. Debris was reported to be across all lanes.

Paramedics treated the middle-aged male victim and transported him to Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital — Riverside in Rockford.

Paramedics were focused on patient care and rapid transport, Schmidt said, adding that the man had serious injuries.

A medical helicopter was placed on standby but was ultimately canceled.

The Illinois State Police said Troop 3 and Troop 1 both responded to the rollover crash involving two passenger vehicles but fire crews at the scene reported only one vehicle involved.

A 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier had rolled over off the shoulder of the road, ejecting the occupant from it, state police said.

All lanes were reported to be temporarily shut down and then reopened, with the right shoulder being closed until a tow truck removed the car.

State police did not say whether any citations or charges were filed or what led to the crash.

A witness told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that she was passed by a car going a minimum of 100 mph before the crash and she believes it was the same vehicle that rolled over.
