Two adults were transported to the hospital for injuries after a vehicle crash caused heavy damage and shut down a busy intersection near Walmart in Antioch, police said.
The Antioch Fire Department and Antioch Police Department responded around 5:44 p.m. Thursday to Route 173 and Deep Lake Road in Antioch for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Fire crews arrived and found a two-vehicle crash with heavy damage in the intersection.
Officers learned a Jeep, driven by a 57-year-old Lindenhurst resident, was traveling on Route 173 attempting to turn left onto Deep Lake Road to travel southbound, according to Antioch Deputy Police Chief Charles Smith.
The Jeep collided with a Nissan sedan, driven by a 40-year-old Richmond resident.
Smith said the Nissan had been traveling eastbound on Route 173 at the intersection when the collision occurred.
Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene. Both drivers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to area hospitals by ambulance.
The intersection was shut down for approximately 25 minutes while emergency crews cleaned up the scene, Smith said.
Smith said the investigation into the cause of the crash is underway and charges are expected to be filed.
The crash occurred at the same time that the Antioch Police Department’s Shop with a Cop event was held across the street at Walmart, leading to what appeared to be heavy police activity.
